Do you know the three management methods of managed industrial Ethernet switches?
2020-04-18
Manageable Industrial Ethernet Switches can be managed through the following methods: via RS-232 serial port (or parallel port) management, via web browser management, and via network management software.
1. Management via serial port
A manageable switch comes with a serial cable for switch management. First, plug one end of the serial cable into the serial port on the back of the switch, and the other end into the serial port of a regular computer. Then power on both the switch and the computer. Use the built-in "HyperTerminal" program in the Windows system to manage serial data.
First, open "HyperTerminal" and after setting the connection parameters, you can interact with the switch through the serial cable. This method does not consume the switch's bandwidth, so it is called "out-of-band management."
Under this management method, the switch provides a menu-driven console interface or command-line interface. You can use the "Tab" key or arrow keys to navigate through menus and submenus, press Enter to execute commands, or use a dedicated switch management command set to manage the switch. Different brands have different command sets, and even switches of the same brand may have different commands. Using menu commands is somewhat more convenient.
2. Management via Web
A manageable switch can be managed via Web (network browser), but an IP address must be assigned to the switch. This IP address is only used for managing the switch and has no other purpose. By default, the switch has no IP address; you must assign one via serial port or other methods before enabling this management mode.
When managing the switch using a web browser, the switch acts like a web server, except the web pages are not stored on a hard drive but in the switch's NVRAM. The web program in the NVRAM can be upgraded via software. When the administrator enters the switch's IP address in the browser, the switch delivers the web page to the computer like a server, making it feel like visiting a website. This method consumes the switch's bandwidth and is therefore called "in-band management."
If you want to manage the switch, simply click the corresponding function items on the web page and change the switch's parameters in text boxes or drop-down lists. Web management can be done within a local area network, enabling remote management.
3. Management via network management software
Manageable switches all comply with the SNMP protocol (Simple Network Management Protocol), which is a set of internationally standardized network device management specifications. Any device that follows the SNMP protocol can be managed through network management software. You only need to install SNMP network management software on a network management workstation, and you can easily manage switches, routers, servers, and other devices on the network via the LAN. Through the SNMP network management software interface, this is also a form of in-band management.
