Future, digital world!

2020-04-18

Siegfried Russwurm is a member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG, responsible for Technology and Human Resources, and also the Director of Siemens Corporate Technology. He outlined his vision for the digital future, describing how the trends driving digitalization will change our lives and how these trends have transformed Siemens' "Future Window."

In the coming decades, which technological trends will dominate? The global energy supply must be based on new sustainable development principles. Electricity, produced, transmitted, and consumed very efficiently, will become an integrated energy carrier over a much wider range than today. The growth rate of global energy demand is three times that of the world population. Moreover, a new era of automation and digital services has arrived. In the next 30 years, the computing power, storage capacity, and data transmission speed of microchips will increase by a thousand times. —— Digital computers will become versatile assistants in daily life and work. By 2050 the year when the urban population will equal today's total global population, and for the first time in history, the number of elderly people will exceed the combined total of children and young people.

Siemens holds a market-leading position in electrification, automation, digitalization, urban infrastructure, and new solutions for healthcare systems, and continues to steadily expand its lead through large-scale research and development. We see that businesses providing digital services are the most dynamic, with annual growth rates reaching 7% to 9% Today, data is the " raw material "—— In stark contrast to other raw materials, the volume of data is continuously increasing. According to analysts at the International Data Corporation, from 2010 year to 2020 year, the amount of digital data stored globally will increase by 40 times. Today, the amount of data generated globally every hour exceeds the total amount of data recorded throughout history. Transforming data into digital services is triggering a major shift in the economic value chain. For example, on a tablet, people can not only read magazines and newspapers but also modify robot parameters or monitor an entire power plant. 50 From big data to smart data

Nevertheless, data itself does not inherently hold any value. The key lies in the content of the data, not its volume.

What matters is not big data, but smart data! For example, a large gas turbine has hundreds of sensors measuring temperature, pressure, current, and gas composition. By correctly analyzing these measurements, recommendations can be made to power plant operators on how to adjust the plant to improve efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. To achieve this, information about the equipment and its operational performance, as well as algorithms for evaluating the data, must be mastered. This truly creates added value for customers, helping them save energy, operate power plants more environmentally friendly, reduce costs, accelerate processes, and improve plant reliability.

Thanks to the use of smart data, Siemens has proposed new solutions across all its business areas: networking of transportation systems, smart grids, and virtual power plants; digital factories equipped with highly automated flexible production facilities; and computer-assisted evaluation of medical data. In all these fields, we face exciting challenges, and meeting these challenges is worth the effort. As a member of Siemens' Managing Board responsible for Technology, I will promote digital transformation throughout the Group, making the creation of innovations that bring great benefits to customers one of my main goals.

New online magazine

Since 2001, Siemens has established a tradition of reporting on future world research, development, and trends in its "Future Window" magazine. We will continue this tradition, but from now on, we will primarily report in a high-quality online magazine.

This will fully reflect all the benefits digital transformation brings to the media world. You can subscribe to the entire magazine or just individual sections. In the new online magazine, you can read about all the most important issues we face in sections such as future visions, articles on trends, reports, interviews, and economic analyses. These articles will be supplemented with videos, animated charts, photo collections, and interactive, comprehensive multimedia features, and the magazine will continuously expand according to readers' wishes. Join us in stepping into the digital world, in research, in the digital edition of "Future Window"! 2001年以来,西门子就已形成在其《未来之窗》杂志中报告未来世界的研究、开发及趋势的传统。
